Jackson County was created on 5 November 1829 and was formed fromIndependence County. named for President Andrew Jackson. Within its boundaries are the scenic White, Cache and Black Rivers. The site of the permanent seat of justice for the county was chosed in 1832 at Litchfied which was on the Jacksonport and Augusta road at the crossing of Village Creek about 3 miles north of the present town of Newport. In 1839 the seat moved to Elizabeth, a place on the northeast side of White River, midway between Jacksonport and Newport. It is now under the river and no longer there. In 1852 it was moved to Augusta which is now the Co seat of Woodruff Co. Next year 1853, Jacksonport became the Co. seat and finally it moved to Newport, the largest town in the county and there it has remained. Jackson County is bordered by Lawrence County (north), Craighead County (northeast), Poinsett County (east), Cross County (southeast), Woodruff County (south), White County (southwest), Independence County (west). Parts of Jackson County was used to form the following counties: White 1835, Woodruff 1862. Other county boundry changes occured when Line with Independence defined 8 November 1836, part of St. Francis attached 10 January 1851.

Jackson County Clerk of Circuit Court has Court Records from 1830 and Land Records from 1831 and is located at 208 Main Street, Newport, 72112; (870) 523-7423 . The circuit clerk is the clerk of the circuit, chancery court, and juvenile court and usually acts as the ex-officio recorder of the county. The administrative duties of the clerk are to maintain a record of all proceedings of the circuit, chancery and juvenile courts and to prepare the dockets for these courts. They are also the ex-officio county recorder; and is responsible for recording deeds, mortgages, liens, and surety bonds, and many other orders and instruments which involve property within the county
Jackson County Clerk has Marriage Records from 1846 and Probate Records from 1845 and is located at 208 Main Street, Newport, 72112; (870) 523-7420 . Although probate court is a court of equity and is presided over by the chancery judge, prior to 1937 it was a function of the county court, and under the amended procedure, the county clerk still operates ad the clerk of the probate court. As clerk to the probate court, the clerk files all instruments making them a matter of record in descendent estate cases, and swears in all witnesses in contested estates. The clerk, also in this capacity, maintains all records relative to adoptions and guardianship cases within the county. Although probate court is a court of equity and is presided over by the chancery judge, prior to 1937 it was a function of the county court, and under the amended procedure, the county clerk still operates ad the clerk of the probate court

Jackson County was formed on November 5, 1829, from part of Independence County. It was named for Andrew Jackson, then first-term president of the United States. Newport is the county seat. The County Seat has been changed five times. Litchfield (1831) Elizabeth (1839), Augusta (1852), Jacksonport (1854) and Newport (1892). The landscape of Jackson County is rich delta farmland in the north, central, and south and rolling hills in the extreme western part. The economy of the county is agricultural, chiefly, rice, soybeans, corn, milo, beef cattle, and catfish. Other industries, aluminum, wood products, manufactured goods and food processing are active. The White River, running across the southwestern part of the county, is one of the premier trout streams in the South. The Black River forms the western boundary and offers good cat fishing. The Wildlife Management Area, with acres of bottomland shared by four other counties, offers hunting that is popular to this area. In June each year a port fest, Rollin’ on the River Festival, is held and has been recognized as one of the top 100 festivals in the nation. Family fun and entertainment abound. Many tourists visit this area each year.
